SOMETHING IS COOKING!

Maia is loving the  LYCEE FRANCAIS de NEW YORK  and learning a ton of things! Now after a year has gone by she is speaking french! Oui oui!  Picking her up at school is a total delight. She is always so happy and full of energy! So while talking with her the other day we came up with a great idea. We are going to make a cooking book! Here is the first recipe that we have created together. Thinking about the kids that don't eat their veggies and that need a little push into being interested in having their veggies so they can grow strong and build muscle! The part that she doesn't know is that everything in this book is healthy and a little sneaky because of how many servings of vegetables and fruit there are in the recipes!
Tricky mom...

TATA'S CARNITAS
These patties are delicious, and can be made out of any kind of meat as long as it is shredded. Turkey, beef and chicken.

Ingredients
( For the kiddies that are picky about the colored veggies try without the kale and the Carrots, the rest of these disappear when cooked)

1 small bunch of Shredded Carrots
1 small bunch of Raw Kale
1 small bunch of Zucchini
1 small bunch of mushrooms
1 lb. of shredded meat. Any kind. Chicken, beef, lamb or turkey.
Salt
Olive oil

Preparation

Chop in very small pieces all of the veggies. In a bowl add the shredded meat, salt and the veggies. mix well until evenly distributed around the whole pound of meat. Make as many small balls of the mixture as possible. You can freeze some and keep them for a rainy day or a quick meal after work. Pat them down with your hands and make them look like tiny burgers. You can serve them up with slider buns and dress them up with whatever your child likes, or serve them up with some rice on the side.
Voila!

SEX, KIDS AND THE CITY

Have you ever wondered or tried to remember what life under the sheets was like before you had kiddies?
I do, I try to remember how often it was and what the schedule was. It was non-stop and the schedule was kind of all over the place. We were younger, the workload didn't have so many responsibilities to attend to and time was not an issue. I find myself now kind of thinking like this...
" hmmm, Maia had a full day of activities, including swimming, playing, ballet and all sorts of things. So, she would be asleep by 7:30 and then we can have romantic dinner, go to bed early so we have some time to dive into the old days" I sometimes have the urge to just put her to sleep and go for a night of fun. This is strange to me suddenly. Having to think that way. Planning my day and my sex life around the kids.

And sometimes I am so beat by the end of the day that sleepiness takes over too early and then my hubby feels dismissed. Have you ever tried to explain how it has nothing to do with him, it's just the running around of the day exhausted every bit of me.

I wonder...
" Can we go back to being play full and fun and loving even when being exhausted from work and activities with the kids? Is love in bed dead?

Lately I have been thinking and putting an effort into being lovey dovey again. Just trying to enamour my guy everyday as if it was the first time, its a fun game for me to find my life back with my husband. I'm loving every bit of this new way of looking at life with hubby and Maia. Maybe when the second comes there will be another couple of years of readjusting but at least I know we will be back on track before that so the distance wont seem so big. I love my husband and want to be with him forever, but also I know we have to take care of each other and I have to stop being so Maia involved and save some of that energy to keeping the romance alive and fresh.
Some tips to do so.
Cook a nice meal, doesn't have to be gourmet just made with love. Maybe a favorite dish. Put the kids to bed and light some candles, or maybe get together to watch a tv show you both enjoy. Buy some wine. Talk softly, ask how his day was. They are like kids they need to know they are appreciated. And you know you do, but they need to listen to you say it.
GOOD LUCK!
Just a thought for all of you!

OUR HURRICANE SANDY STORY AND IMAGES

HURRICANE SANDY

It was October 28th and already the news was nonstop about Sandy.  The Windows in our 36th street apt had been taped up with crosses as we had read on the internet, and Maia our oldest daughter was already sleeping in our bedroom ( something we only do on special occasions like endless feverish nights and this time the Hurricane.)  We were prepared for some damage like last year with Hurricane Irene. Water had come through the AC units and damaged some of the wood flooring in our home. We were watching the news and listening to when the worst would come.  The wind at night shook the apt walls and made sounds similar to those heard when on a boat.
We woke up on Oct 29th and nothing had happened... yet. My husband went to the East riverside by our apt to check the water levels and they were already at the level of the sidewalk. The waves were crashing onto the docks and water was spilling onto the ferry's entrance and covering the bottom of the benches placed there to look at sunsets.  It was only 10 am and the worst was yet to come said the news casts everywhere. Between the moon and the winds, two hurricanes blasting at the same time over the northeast , the water levels were supposed to get at a high of ten feet or more. Our apt building is in a Zone A. This was a sign that we should evacuate emmidiately. I was 39 weeks pregnant with our second daughter and had decided that this time around we would deliver at NYU medical Center instead of Lenox Hill because of the closeness to our home and my first delivery being an under three hour record delivery. That day we packed a small carry on with the basic toiletries Arts and Crafts things for Maia and her dudu bunny. We took a taxi to my uncles apt on the upper west side for the night. We thought it would be a short and fun stay. The outcome was very different.

That night the horrors of hurricane Sandy started coming all over the news, how water levels had risen so much that even downtown and zone A buildings in NYC were underwater. Our neighbor was texting us to make sure that the things on our terrace were still there and not flying missiles on the street. His last text at 12:30 pm was " lobby is underwater and no power, will shutdown to save the battery, wish me luck"
We could see the fields of the upper west side filled with water as if they belonged to the river itself. the winds were gushing, and the water we had saved in the bathtub was rocking from one side to the other. Between twitter pictures and facebook images we saw what was going on. Another neighbor on our floor texted " there are two jetskis with police men on first avenue"
It is hard to even imagine such a thing. Maia's school had sent us an email with the cancellation of all activities until further notice and I was already having some small of contractions. NYU was being evacuated as they got hit very hard by the rising waters in their basement. Where their radiology department and research departments were. I had no Hospital to deliver in and couldn't get in touch with my OB to ask him what I should do. My husband had just started working at Lenox Hill so we decided to find a Dr there and deliver at Lenox. Thursday I met with my OB from NYU and he said I was 3 Cm's and the baby's head was very low. The next day I met my Lenox Hill OB at 8:00 am. He saw me at 8:30 and said " girl you are 5 Cm's go straight to the hospital and Ill see you there in  two hours.
Not only hit by Hurricane Sandy our second child decided it would be a great idea to come 10 days before her scheduled due date. Marcella Isabel was born on Nov 2nd 2012 at 3:07 pm at Lenox Hill Hospital at a tiny 5.13 ounces and a very long 20.5 inches. We went back to my uncles and lived there for the next ten days.

Our building's lobby was completely ruined.  Elevators were filled with water, the offices and playroom completely destroyed and we had no electricity, heat or water. It looked like a war zone. The carpets had been stripped, and all furniture was thrown out except for the heavy stone tables. We got 7 feet in the Lobby this not counting the basement, which was under water too.

We are living in our building with all amenities restored, thinking to ourselves...
will this mess happen again?

A week later I went to photograph in the most affected areas of New York State. State Island, Coney Island and the Far Rockaways. What devastation I witnessed. Not one home spared from the rising water, the sand and the wind. My images are not of destruction but of quiet places where a week before there was life. Colorful blue skies and empty playgrounds and beaches. Landscapes of the spaces where hundreds used to go to get away from their stress and relax under the sun. these places are now a strong and eternal reminder of how vulnerable we are when it comes to nature. Nature will take its course and we are in the way.

HAPPY DIWALI, NEW YEAR AND YEAR OF THE DRAGON EVERYONE!

Long time no see guys. After the craziness of the holidays and the craziness of getting back into the school/class routine's ( yes, it takes me at least a good three weeks to get organized) I am ready to tell you that my new children's website is up!!!!!!!! I have been working hard to finisFebruary knocks on my door. Mission accomplished.
Go to
www.laraalcantarachildren.com
and check it out!
It was a hard process but sure worth it.
Our three week Miami vacation was amazing, Maia finally doesn't throw up in a car every time we get in one ( unless is a NYC yellow cab of course ) she is now swimming like a dolphin or she would say " mami a mermaid" and my art Career is already starting to pick up some speed. I was interviewed on Venezuelan TV with skype for a live show that has an artsection on January the 13th, I am being interviewed for a website called zonaportatil.com and I am assistant professor in a lighting class at the International Center of Photography. yee haa! Loving all of it. Also Valentines day is around the corner and you and I have to strat thinking of a good Valentines day gift!

Maybe an art photo for your home, A beautiful book with images from our past shoots or some images of your child's favorite toy, blanky or shoes.

Elmo

Venezuelans in the mix, I have an AVILA Project that I made last year that has some beautiful images for your "missing Venezuela" kind of guy. Here are some samples for that.

Life has gotten great and Maia is so big now she is such a wonderful companion. At the end ladies it does become a fascinating experience. I loved the other years but this one up to now has been my favorite. I get stories and questions and thoughts from her and it just makes me so happy to finally be able to have a great day without any crazy tantrums, diapers, screams, etc etc etc. She is now my littlest of friends. I love her company. For some parents all stages are great. Even the whole breast feeding situation ( not for me at all) and thinking about having another child as hard as it is to realize that it's kind of a must is in the plans. I have come to a final decision, to all of those that have heard me go back and forth on the whole idea. It will be very hard for me to get back into it, But seriously in 4 years It will be amazing again! jajajaja
Maybe a dragon baby? jajaja dunno.

Well guys leave you with some images of the holidays, and a new recipe for the delicious Kale Salad. Kale is hard to cook but this is the best way to have it.

KALE SALAD
- I bunch of Kale
- 3 limes
- 3 tbsp of olive oil
- 1 1/2 tbsp of liquid Amino ( you can find this at whole foods) It is a natural soy protein sauce.

First wash your kale, cut stems off. In a jar or container you can close to shake the dressing put squeeze the 3 limes, trhow the 3 tbsp of olive oil and the amino. Shake well until well mixed. Then in the container where the kale is toss half of your dressing, with clean hands squeeze the kale and the dressing together very well, until you strat to notice the kale is softening. This you can do depending on how you like it. Some people like it softer than others.

Throw some dried salted almonds or some toasted sesame seeds in.
Enjoy!

Also I am now offering Gift Certificates for Lara Alcantara Photography here is a sample.

Some pics, Maia and her long hair, reading a book while dancing in an outfit her grandma sewed for her, sneaking behind a pillar at the park, and some pics from our new years party!

GIFT IDEA NUMBER 2

I have come up with other projects that may be of interest to you or to a loved one. One of them is a project I called "Steps"
This year for christmas I have started new set of images for parents that want to have a little piece of their children's baby years made into art. The process is simple. You find a pair of shoes that you find hard to part with and still have lying around the house. You send it to me, I photograph it with a very high resolution camera, making sure the little details are in the image,we chat and find a small phrase that you want on the bottom of the image that might sum up what they mean to you and to your child's development track. I print it on an archival 11X14 size paper and send it to you. It is a very beautiful and personal gift.

These for example are my daughter's first real shoes and if you notice you can even see the small marks of her 11 month old toes. She destroyed these shoes in the summer of 2008.

GIFT IDEA NUMBER 3

For all of those who's home used to be Caracas, Venezuela, I have a series I made of the Avila in various sizes for sale. They are editions of ten, still have at least 8 or 7 of each size left. Here are the images.

Small Size $300
Medium Size $ 400
Large Size Special order $ 500
Holiday Special with frame $ 700-1400

GIFT IDEA NUMBER 4

The last Holiday gift is the one and only Crib-a-Book, made and patented by yours truly. Which is the best way to have your bookworms keep some books by their bedside, a water bottle for midnight thirsts and maybe a flashlight like my Maia so when she is a little scared of the dark she can have a bit of light at reaching distance. Before the monsters in the closet get to her vast imagination. This hangs on the wall, or crib railing so your early waking toddler can be entertained for a while so you can get a bit more of sleep. Who wouldn't love you for that.
And so I have come to the end of all of my gifting ideas from Lara Alcantara Photography!!!!!!
